*ABOUT THE BLACK PEARL *
North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Founded roughly in 1934, Atlantic Beach located between Windy Hill and Crescent Beach in North Myrtle Beach is a historic beach and community in South Carolina founded by the rich culture of the Gullah Geechee families and black entrepreneurs. During the time of segregation and the Jim Crow era, Atlantic Beach–nicknamed “The Black Pearl”– was an oceanfront community for African Americans who were denied access to Myrtle Beach and other leisure sites due to segregation. It became a haven for culture and freedom. Today the legacy is still alive and thriving with annual events such as the Gullah Geechee Festival and Atlantic Beach BikeFest. In 2025, Atlantic Beach was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its significance as one of the few remaining historically Black oceanfront communities in the U.S.
Overview of Gilded Coast Collection*
This capsule honors the historic American Black beaches that emerged during segregation—places built from both necessity and vision. Each piece salutes the pioneering coastal communities who carved space for rest, joy, and dignity when the world often refused them. These beaches, some still standing today, were sanctuaries of resilience and belonging—reminders that access to the water was not a privilege, but a birthright carried in legacy.
